Brumen Biennial Guests
France, guest of 3rd BSVC & IDE (2007)
After graduating from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 1964, he completed his studies in 1971 with graduate work at the Institut de l’Environnement in Paris.
In 1970 he founded Grapus with F. Miehe and G. Paris-Clavel; A. Jordan and J.-P. Bachollet joined the group in 1976. Grapus sought to ‘change life’ through a twofold dynamic of graphic arts and political action. After 1990, when Grapus decided to end their activities, Bernard founded the Atelier de Création Graphique with D. Behage and F. Draaijer.
Bernard has received numerous awards and prizes: at the bienniales in Warsaw (1978, 1980), in Brno (1978, 1982), in Lahti, in Colorado Biennale (1983), at Zgraf in Zagreb, the Art Directors Club in New York, the Triennale of Toyama (1988), the France’s National First Prize for Graphic Arts (1990), and the prestigious Erasmus prize for ‘Design for the public domain’ (2006).
Pierre Bernard has been a member of the International Graphic Alliance since 1987, and currently teaches graphic design at the Ecole National Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
