Twenty years after visual communications became a course at the Ljubljana Academy
of Fine Arts, the Brumen Foundation launched the 1st Biennial of Slovene Visual
Communication. Many things have happened in the meantime, including a new country
and a new social system. This lively revival resulted in increasing demands for
new visual messages. "Fast-food" design, which decreases inter-personal communication
effectiveness, affects the quality of life, and becomes disturbing and violent,
began to dominate. Therefore, Slovenian design desperately needed a periodical
critical overview of and public awards for achievements.
November 29 2003 is one of the most significant dates in the contemporary history
of Slovenian design: the opening of the 1st Biennial of Slovene Visual Communications
marks the beginning of the continuous professional assessment of creative quality
in visual communication. With the Biennial, the young discipline has gained an
opportunity to check, compare, and get an overview of the designers and their
work, and to gain recognition of design knowledge, know-how and skills.
The Biennial of Slovene Visual Communication is a specialised and expert-based
overview of visual communications. All applications are assessed by a special
committee of domestic experts, who select the best for subsequent exhibition,
and refer them to an international jury. The judges award the best works in each
category and the work which fulfils all the international criteria of excellence
is awarded the highest prize - the Brumen Grand Prix for the best visual message
of Slovenia.
The Biennial of Slovene Visual Communications has been held three times (2003,
2005, 2007). The work, which received awards, by such prominent international
designers as Anna Berkenbusch, Pierre Bernard, Max Bruinsma, William Drenttel,
Jessica Helfand, Cyprian Koscielniak, Bo Linnemann, Bruno Monguzzi, Aleš Najbrt,
Jean-Françoise Porchez, Rick Poynor, Erik Spiekermann, and Wieczyslaw Wasilewski,
is finally being presented outside Slovenia - at an exhibition in Brno.

Judging Brumen Design Biennale
Hello, I am Max Bruinsma from Amsterdam, Holland, and I have the honor of presenting
to you the results of this year's Biennial of Slovene Visual Communications' competition.
An honor I share with my colleagues in the jury: Anna Berkenbusch from Berlin,
Germany; Piotrek Mlodozeniec from Warsaw, Poland; Aloisj Najbrt from Prague, the
Czech Republic; and Erik Spiekermann from Berlin, Germany.
None of us are very familiar with Slovenian graphic design, I must admit. We asked
the Brumen Foundation, who were so kind to invite us, if that would be a problem,
and we were told that - on the contrary - they considered it an advantage: we
could look with fresh eyes to a design culture which does not want to limit itself
to its national confines.
We didn't know what to expect and whether we should be judging the things we saw
against the European and international standards with which we are familiar -
which doesn't seem fair at first sight for a young design culture - or whether
we should look at the national Slovenian standards, which we do not know very
well...
The moment we saw the works on display in this exhibition, we decided we could
just be our critical selves. On average, what we see here is of a level of professionalism
and creativity that we see in many other countries in Europe and the rest of the
world. Which means that we can cheerfully ignore any inclination towards politeness
we might have ;-)
So we have looked quite critically, as we are used to, and we looked for the work
that genuinely surprised us, fascinated us, inspired or amused us...
By stating that the general level of quality in design in this selection is quite
high, we also gave ourselves the task of pointing out the works that were recognizably
and arguably above that standard.
This means that we have been thrifty with giving awards. But we also wanted to
point out designs of which we admired or wanted to applaud certain aspects, even
if we could criticize other aspects of the work. Thus, we have made a distinction
between awards and commendations. The awards go to designs that in our judgment
are exemplary in solving the problem they are faced with in their realm of design;
the commendations go to designs which may, in our view, not be perfect in every
respect, but which are addressing aspects of the problem they are confronted with
in an exemplary manner.
Of course, we're just five persons from abroad that happen to have an opinion
about design in general. We're not saying that we know it all and have seen it
all. But we can assure you that we did our best to compare and contrast the work
we see here with what we have come to regard in our own practices as the kind
of design we'd like to applaud - and that we had a great time doing that. We thank
the board of the Brumen Foundation and the organizers of the Biennial of Slovene
Visual Communications for inviting us and giving us the opportunity to be blatantly
arrogant ;-) and we thank the Slovenian design community, which I guess means
you, for presenting us with work that we really enjoyed to become acquainted with!
And now for the official verdicts ;-)
I will follow the order of categories that is given in the catalogue of this year's
biennial, and thus start withy the first category:
01 typefaces
Generally we are very pleased by the high quality of designs in this section of
the competition. We acknowledge the work of Lucijan Bratus, not only as a type
designer but also as an educator of new generations of typographic designers...
The award, however, goes to an outstanding achievement
which comprises a complete and varied font family for a national newspaper. We
think that in all its modesty of appearance it is an extremely well balanced font
and an exhaustive system which can cover anything a newspaper could ever want
to print. Moreover, the various versions and elaborations of the family are not,
as you often see in type families, over-homogenized - each variant keeps its own
individuality, but all of them definitely work together like a family. We compliment
the newspaper Delo for commissioning this typeface and award designer Ermin
Mededovic with his achievement, the Delo
typeface family.
02 signs, symbols and logotypes
We have an award and a commendation in this category:
The commendation goes to a problem solved exemplary for
this kind of client: it is rare that one sees this kind of intelligent visual
minimalism in a logo for a university department. For his intricate digitization
of the three letters of the
Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana,
which is a witty visual translation of his client's core business, we commend
designer Boris Divjak of Innovative.
The award is for the perfect logo for a clothing brand
with the name 'Eleven'.
The brand is the result of a workshop in which a series of t-shirts were designed.
The jury agrees it's a very good piece of design, which sees a solution before
the rest of us think it's obvious. We applaud Miha Grobler,
for Kid Dog design studio for turning a name into a logo that immediately becomes
familiar.
03 stationery
The award in this category goes to a basic stationary
which solves its problem perfectly in a perfectly simple and cost-effective way.
Of course, there have been more solutions like this: a simple rubber stamp with
a date-indicator, but this one stands out because it provides its clients with
a visual personality in a playful use of typography, pictograms, color and the
medium itself - a stamp that can be applied to almost any carrier, and will look
good and graceful however you use it. We award Mateuzs Medja
of Gigodesign for his stationary design for Kastelic
and Levicar.
04 corporate identity
In this category, we commend not so much a corporate identity, but a design manual:
The jury admires the care with which this design bureau covered every practical
aspect of implementing the corporate design for their client, down to the tiniest
details, and laid-out the most exhaustive standards in a very clear and accessible
manual. We commend the designers of Gigodesign
for their design manual for supermarket tus,
and for doing something quite out of the ordinary for this kind of commission.
05 information graphics
In this category, we have two commendations.
The first goes to a design which is actually not so much an information design,
as well as an innovative use of a hybrid of signage, experimental typography and
public interior decoration. For giving some color and sense of place to such a
dark and undifferentiated space as a parking
garage, we commend Eduard Cehovin of Oblikovalski
Center.
The second commendation in this category is for a design
which may not be totally innovative, but which deserves a special mention because
it is applied with exemplary care and consistency. Rather than using standard
pictograms in a standard interface, Silvia Cerne and colleagues
developed a completely new set of pictograms and a new interface for Gorenje's
touch-screen washing machine. The jury commends them for good practice.
06 posters
This category was the largest in this year's competition, and one of the hardest
to judge, given the high standard of the entries.
We commend a project which we value as a series of poetic interventions in the
public realm, and as a fascinating exercise in the cultural use of a typographic
visual language. We commend Eduard Cehovin of Oblikovalski
Center for their billboards devoted to the celebration of Srecko
Kosovel.
Even with the generally high average quality of design in this category, the jury
was quite fast in recognizing the posters which merit the award. They are witty
and playful, they demonstrate a distinctive personal handwriting, which becomes
- quite literal - part of the posters' subject, thereby communicating its message
directly and seductively. We award the posters for Andrej
Rozman Roza's theatre performances, designed by Radovan Jenko.
07 books
We have two commendations in this category.
The first commendation goes to a book that we admire for
the care and sophistication with which its pages were designed. And although we
don't see the need for the gloss square on the square cover, we do applaud Ranko
Novak for the precision and love with which he designed the interior of
'Man
in a magic square' and made the book a poetic object in itself.
Our second commendation goes to a cheerfully fresh staging
of a studio's sketchbook. It is an avalanche of visual ideas and puns, a visual
sourcebook that is just plain fun to leaf through: the recycled work of 'fenoman',
Futro's Slavimir Stojanovic.
08 book covers
In this category, we like to commend a cover for its novel
and fascinating use of material - cork - which is fitting for its subject - wine
- but which we have not seen used in this manner before. In combination with this
rare material, the embossed typography of the title works perfectly on the cover
of the luxury edition of Vina
Slovenlie, designed by Zare Kerin.
09 catalogues and monographs
In this category, we would like to commend two catalogues which form a consistently
designed series, while at the same time treating each book individually. They
both feature some of the best crafted typography we have seen in this year's selection,
with exemplary combined typefaces. Although they are almost too beautiful for
their subjects, we commend designer Robert
Zvokelj of ID studio for his designs of 'Grafitists'
and especially 'Partisans
in Print'.
The best of category award for monographs goes to a book
which shuns aesthetics, but arrives at a design which is completely consistent
with the work presented in it - from front- to back cover. In a careful arrangement
of text and images, of color and forms, the visual and editorial design exemplifies
a careful and loving approach to the subject: the work of the artist Mladen
Stilinovic. The award, therefore, goes to designer Ajdin
Basic.
10 - annual reports
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
11 calendars
In this category we would like to award a diary that will
save you the work of scribbling in the margins, so typical for used agendas -
In this case the diary comes with little drawings and scribbles of a quality and
sheer joy that few of us will ever reach. This 'pre-doodled'
calendar gives a personality to something that mostly comes with none at all;
we award Radovan Jenko for it.
12 packaging
We have one commendation in this category, which we judge
excellent in it's execution of detail and typography. It's a classic Italian design
for an Italian style liquor, with nice detailing in the die-stamped fruits that
drop below the bottom line of the label, and a carefully crafted packaging. Zare
Kerin made Viljamovka
and Sadjevec bottles and their packaging into something that you want to give
away as a present.
13 brochures, invitations, greeting cards, flyers and small-format
promotional leaflets (we call this category: Various
;-)
One series of designs stood out in this category of very varied works. It is a
series of leaflets, or pamphlets or the kind of publication for which the French
seem to have invented the term 'je ne sais quoi'... Weird stuff that lands on
your doormat from time to time and presents you with an interesting riddle, designed
in an enticing way. Even if you may suspect it from being on the edge of embracing
a 'bad design' attitude, it is sympathetic and thought-provoking in both form
and content. It may feel like hot air to you, but breathing it brought a smile
to our faces... We're talking about Futro's
fanzine, designed by Slavimir Stojanovic and Ivan
Ilic.
14 periodicals and newspapers
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
15 printing advertisements and advertising campaigns The
commendation in this category goes to an advert that is
not only cool in terms of visual fun, but also makes sense: it reminds you to
call a taxi when you've had too much to drink! We think it merits a place as a
poster inside or next to cafés and restaurants, this design of Pristop's Aljoša
Bagola for Intertours
Taxi.
The award for best campaign goes to a series of very humorous
and intelligent visual associations on a reader's obsessions. A large photograph
with a small tag line and logo will convince the target group of dedicated book
lovers that this store understands them: we award Tina Brezkovic,
Andrej Basa and Vera Stankovic
of Mayer McCann for their witty campaign for Vale Novak bookstores (Towels,
Food,
Cloths).
16 postage stamps and securities
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
17 jacket designs of audio and video carriers
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
18 digital graphics
In this category we take the title literally: although we could be quite critical
of the interface design - or lack of it - for the website for Andrej
Rozman Roza, we do wish to commend Radovan Jenko for
his graphics for this website, which are as playful and personal as his work for
Roza's posters, and a reminder that hand drawing and the digital screen are not
principally at odds.
19 television graphics
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
20 illustration as part of visual communication design
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
21 photography as part of visual communication design
We regret not having any commendations or awards in this category
22 student works
The award for best student work goes to a series of presentation
posters which are so full of ideas and experiments that we have no doubt their
designer will be quite busy working them all out in the next few years. In part,
it's the kind of free experimentation that is a student's privilege, but the fun
in bending the rules in this case is accompanied by serious work in executing
not just the surface, but the nitty-gritty of a cheerful variety of digital fonts.
There is, as said, a _lot_ of content in these experimentations, held together
in an ironic play with the question of when type becomes an illustration, and
vice-versa. We award the keen and curious explorations in digital
typography of Luka Manchini.

Restrained but nevertheless ornate in its typographic scheme, this book embraces
the buoyancy and spirit of its subject - a theatrical, boldly expressive costume
designer. A massive volume that combines photography, text and reference information,
orchestrated with precision into a curated body of work, the design neither shies
away from nor overwhelms the work being featured.

Winner: BRDA
Wine Label
A delicately executed series of labels - one running horizontally and the other
applied at an angle - make for a fundamentally elegant solution to a wine label.
The typography conveys a quality of subtle legitimacy, and the inventive use of
the secondary (smaller) label reads as a grace note - or a modern interpretation
of a wax seal.
Designer: TOMAŽ PLAHUTA
Honorable Mention: SOLNI
CVET Salt Label
Minimal and spare, this black, white and red program for a series of sea-salt
packages impressed the judges with its modern appeal to simplicity. At least one
of our judges wanted to go out and buy this product: the ultimate endorsement
for any product!
Designer: Primož Pislak
13 brochures, invitations, greeting cards, flyers and small-format
promotional leaflets (we call this category: Self Promotion)
FUTROZINE
AND FUTRO GOOD NEWS
As a series of publications some of which open up into posters, Futrozine offers
an intelligent way of promoting ideas through a bold, sustained typographic vocabulary.
Designers: SLAVIMIR STOJANOVIĆ, IVAN ILIĆ
14 periodicals and newspapers
SIGN-POST
Effective design solution in a tough environment - one of the judges called it
a "hostile environment" - how to design a visually compelling series of publications
for business people? Kažipot uses a minimal color palette and a restrained typographic
system to create clean, clear publications that brilliantly address its exact
audience.
Designer: ROBERT ŽVOKELJ
15 printing advertisements and advertising campaigns
DEER

all advertising should be!
Designers: ALJOŠA BAGOLA, ROBERT KRIŽMANČIČ

TWO
PIANOS Music CD
Beautifully crafted, understated and incredibly tactile: modernism par excellence
- and it worked in concert with the piano music recorded on the CD, This proves
that design can be simple and still be powerful.
Designer: VLADAN SRDIĆ
18 digital graphics
Winner: ITAK
PARK Website
Outstanding work in avatar customization: seamless integration of user input with
computational processing. The judges were particularly taken with Elvis!
Designers: GSUS AJAX, ŽIGA TESTEN, BOR HOJS, TINA HOJS, GAL ERBEŽNIK
Honorable Mention: "TERAN
SMOLA" Website
Clever, original idea that shows that less can be more even in interface design:
the progressively disappearing typography underscores the dirt-removal that is
the focus of this company's primary service. Beautifully done.
Designers: ANDRAŽ FILAČ, ŽARE KERIN
Honorable Mention: Gorenje
design and GORENJE
& GORENJE ORA-ITO Websites
Goranje's products are well-served by a series of websites that employ a simple
formal scheme (black and white photography, with accented type in red) and strong
typography. These sites are easy to navigate and benefit from 360-degree views
of their kitchen products, some of which users can turn at will.

CAT
BOOK
The jury didn't actually know that there were this many different kinds of cats
in the known universe, and appreciated the feline diversity in this book. We urge
you to buy a dog before it's too late!
